Storm Clouds and Irises

An off road adventure
in the back hills of New Mexico
fifty miles north of the Ruidoso Raceway
we saw storm clouds gather along the horizon
forcing us back to the main highway.

Thunder and lightning preceded the hail
that
pelted the Durango unmercifully.
We waited under an overpass
until the storm was done.

Minutes later the chaos

subsided and the sun
broke through the clouds.

We continued our journey
up to the iris farm where many

varieties of flowers bloomed.

A few other artist braved the weather

and spread out among the gardens
to paint. We were careful to avoid

the puddles along the walkway.
Inspired by the aftermath of the summer

rain we painted until the stars came out.
