Scarecrows In The Cornfields

A stuffed image of a derelict man hanging
from a post is a common sight used to repel
crows, at least for part of the summer

but why have a stationary sentry
in a tattered shirt and old straw hat
if he can't keep the birds
away for the season?

Even with an outrageous face
he doesn't frighten them
once they see he is a landing spot.

I’ve learned, through daily experiment,
a little bit of bling will catch the wind
and create movements with flashes of light.

By adding accessories to dangle and jangle
it will startle the birds and keep them in flight.
Through trial and error I think I will make

an oversized woman in a loose fitting dress
who will rattle and dance and make such a fuss
to keep the crows out of the cornfield.
