Battle on the Gridiron

People gather in homes and bars
across the nations to watch the battle
between the best; physical giants
in a televised arena, like the gladiators
from Rome, fighting for the prize.

Unlike the skirmish of old
there is no life and death, only fame
and fortune, trophies and bragging rights
“Let the match begin.”

Intimidation and aggression
from many offspring of former slaves
team owners or plantation masters
are determined to win the game.

The thunder of applause
cameras, and cheerleaders,
with whoops and hurrahs,
support the skirmish of the year.

When the winners emerge
after close calls and spectacular plays,
trophies are awarded with congratulations
and high fives, the event is over for another
 year.
