Poor by any standard
washed all her clothes by hand
grew her own food - staples
like beans, chilies and tomatoes
but when the work was done
and she could go out for awhile
she took out her pin curls
put on her red lipstick,
donned a simple cotton dress
looking more glamorous than a movie star.
