Desert Blooms
First time on the chaparral
everything looks barren
but after a moment I can see
a dusting of purple across the sand.
Is it aster, arroyo lupine
or western hounds tongue?
The longer I look the better I see
what I thought were dried leaves
are delicate blooms on wild grasses
alfalfa, blue grass and alkali
Splashes of orange
catch my eyes
I distinguish lupine in the arroyos
and wake robin at the edge of the sky
My eyes become sharper
soon I make-out mission bells,
poppies, and asters
like a sacred mystery
I've discovered the music
in the desert symphony.
