Five Haikus For Japan

Japan’s Disaster

Sleeping earth shakes
Ocean washes homes away
Nuclear threats loom

Loss of Life

Many swept to sea
My heart smashed upon the shore
Shattered like glass

Lessons Learned

Vast devastation
Preparation a facade
Now, is all they have

Rebuilding

Today do laundry
Tonight kiss the kids and pray
Tomorrow rebuild

Diplomatic Relationship

Cherry blossoms bloom
Gift to Washington D.C.
Love flows back to thee

Labor of Love

Life needs maintenance
Time the unrelenting foe
Commitment wanted

Seeds for new life sown
Quiet then an early spring
Fields awash in bloom

Heart soon discovers
Sheer satisfaction awaits
Patience rewarded

Crops swell then ripen
Branches heavy with harvest
Summer miracle

Sweet succulent fruit
Awakens deep desire
Lasting passion

Balancing Act

Several smooth flat stones
piled high to form towers
touching clear blue skies

Perilous structures
positioned haphazardly
stand a little while

Wind blows, earth shudders
unstable sculptures tumble
crashing to the ground

Boulders and pebbles
rumble to the river's bed
ruins turned to sand

Arid desert sun
Dried, red hot chili peppers
Heal an ailing heart

Bryce Canyon, Utah
Canyons of limestone
Where ancient spirits wander
Bridging the divide

New England

These pictures were taken from our trip to New England in 2005. The Haikus were written last year. I thought it was time to share them together.

Every occasion
A special celebration
With red Maine lobster

Niagara Falls, New York
Water splashes white
Thunders, grumbles, crashes, roars Senses heart’s delight

Arizona and Colorado

The photos were taken by my husband while we were on vacation. The Haiku pattern is five, seven, five syllables.

Sedona, Arizona
Red rocks touch blue sky
Blow on a dandelion
Scattered wishes fly

Rocky Mountains, Colorado
Love’s tender footpath
Fades with summer memories
Thunder clouds converge
